This picture was taken on June 15 in the beautiful grounds of the FCJ Centre, a serene oasis beside the Elbow River right next to downtown Calgary. On Friday night and Saturday these women, along with several other Women’s Ministry volunteers, gathered to reflect on our last ministry year and celebrate all that God has done in this past year . . . and to dream, brainstorm, pray about and plan for the coming year.
Over those two days, I was reminded of the wonder of the Body of Christ. Working together with this group offered a beautiful picture of diversity in unity. We pooled our gifts, knowledge and experiences, called on the Spirit that enlivens, fills and unites us, and were amazed at his blessing and guidance.
And on top of that, as I worked with these gifted and dedicated women, my heart was filled with gratitude for them and for all of you who have served faithfully and with great love over this past year. Like all years, we, as a family, have walked through joy and sorrow together. The gift is that through all that we have experienced God, we have discovered God’s love and blessing in new ways. It has been a great year! Thank you to all of you who have served women here at Foothills. Because you have served and allowed God’s grace and power to flow through you, many, many women have had the opportunity to grow in Making Connections with God, Each Other and the World.
Little did we know that only a few days later, that beautiful river would join with the Bow to create havoc and great loss throughout our city and turn people’s lives upside down. Again, I have been amazed at the capacity of so many to reach out and show Jesus’ love in the midst of great difficulty. As we end this year’s focus on Making Connections with our World, I am thankful God continues to be glorified as you follow him and he speaks and works through you.
Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ.
To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.
